What to Avoid When Choosing New Countertops

Jan 13, 2021 | Construction, House, Premier Countertop Installation and Fabrication

There is a lot to think about when choosing new countertops for your home. What color should you go with? Which material should you choose? What is the overall style of your space? How much is your budget going to be? And these are just a few of the many questions you should take time to consider before choosing new countertops.

At Bad Lizard Granite & Quartz, we understand that choosing new countertops is a sizable decision, but our team is here to help answer your questions and walk you through every step of the process. Continue reading to learn about some things to avoid doing when choosing new countertops for your space.

NOT CREATING A BUDGET

The best place to begin before any home project or home upgrades is to create a well-planned budget. When choosing the right countertop for your space, you should think about how much money you want to spend and the countertop style you would like for your home.

When researching the best type of countertop for your space, our team recommends contacting a local countertop fabricator to discuss pricing based on the countertop material type, rarity, color, texture and edges. This will give you a good idea of what you want and how much it will cost. If you would like to learn more about how to save money for your dream countertops, check out our blog, Countertop Costs: How to Save for Your Dream Countertops.

CHOOSING THE WRONG COLOR

Choosing the right color countertops is one of the most significant decorating decisions you will make for your home. To choose the right color countertops, first think about the surrounding colors and undertones in your space — especially those of the floor, walls and cabinets. Make sure that the countertop color you choose is compatible with those aspects. Next, consider the amount and type of lighting in the room. If you have high ceilings and ample natural lighting, you can choose dark-colored countertops. Whereas, if your space is not well-lit, dark-colored countertops may not be the best choice. Finally, you should choose a stone that offers the colors you desire. For example, granite comes in 50+ shades, and each slab of the material is unique with varying lines, colors and patterns. If you would like to learn more about how to choose the right color countertops, check out our blog, How to Choose Countertop Colors for Your Home.

NOT CONSIDERING THE BEST STONE FOR YOUR SPACE

It is our team’s job to instill confidence in your next project, and we want you to feel comfortable with your countertop decision. All of the materials we offer at Bad Lizard Granite & Quartz are excellent, viable options — you just need to find the one that best fits what you are looking for in a countertop. For example, marble is a durable and heat-resistant countertop material that maintains cool temperatures. However, marble is a porous material, and it can get scratched easily. On the other hand, quartz is a durable, low-maintenance material that is stain and scratch-resistant and easily cleaned. But quartz is not as heat resistant as natural stone. CHOOSING THE WRONG THICKNESS

You want to choose a countertop that has the correct thickness for your space. If you choose a countertop that is the wrong thickness, it can lead to additional seams or other serious problems down the road. Our team recommends consulting your local countertop fabricator to get help on choosing the thickness that will work best for your space.

CHOOSING THE WRONG FABRICATOR

Suppose you pick a countertop supplier without doing any research or asking questions about their experience. In that case, it will cause undue stress and frustration at a time that is supposed to be exciting. While it may seem like a good idea to choose the cheapest option for materials and craftsmanship to save money, according to our team, this is not the best decision. Selecting the most affordable choice could be far more expensive in the long run if work is not completed correctly or the materials used are not of good quality.
