Small Bathroom Design 101

Aug 11, 2021 | Bathroom, House

Renovating or creating any space can seem daunting, especially if it is a small space. Limited space may make you think that your creativity will be restricted. Small bathrooms, whether they be a full bath with a shower or tub, or a half bath/powder room, can sometimes feel crowded. However, with the right features, fixtures and colors, you can easily make your space feel more open! Continue reading to learn more about small bathroom design and some tips and tricks to make your bathroom project go seamlessly.

SET YOUR BUDGET

The first step before you dive into your small bathroom project is to create a budget. According to Angie’s List, an average bathroom remodel can cost anywhere from $10,000 – $15,000, with labor accounting for approximately 20% of the budget. However, this varies depending on the size of your bathroom and whether you are adding a shower or tub.

Some things to consider when creating your budget are:

  • Is this your forever home, or are you looking to sell within a few years?
  • Do you want to increase the value of your home?
  • Do you want to change the location of already existing plumbed-in items?
  • What fixtures of your new bathroom are essential?

Once you have made these decisions, it is also best to put a little money aside for unexpected expenses, especially if it is an older home. For example, if you are dealing with an older home, you may run into rusted pipes, mold or water damage.

INCORPORATE REMNANTS

Small bathrooms mean less countertop space. That’s what our remnant selection is for! Frequently, we are left with smaller pieces that aren’t large enough to do full-size kitchen projects. When we order the next bundle of that same material, the differences are noticeable enough that we can’t mix and match the stone from the previous bundle. Therefore, we call these leftover stones remnants. Remnants are a great way to obtain a classy look in your bathroom without breaking the bank. If you’d like to learn more about remnants and our selection, read our Remnants 101 blog.

INCLUDE LIGHT COLORS AND FEATURES

When working with a small space, it’s important to stay light and sharp. Drab and dull colors can make your room feel smaller and tighter, which is the opposite of what you want to create in a small bathroom. Creating a focal wall or using light colors with a splash of something bright is a great way to add some fun to the space.

A great feature to add to a small bathroom is beadboard. Beadboard in the bathroom can add a classy and sophisticated feel while still keeping the room feeling open and airy.

PLENTY OF DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) OPPORTUNITIES

A positive to working in a small space is that these spaces often mean less work. Therefore, a small bathroom renovation is a perfect opportunity to put some of your DIY skills to the test! Aside from plumbing and electrical work, updating and painting the walls, adding new fixtures and towel racks, installing a new vanity, grouting tile floors or installing laminate flooring are great ways to save money and add some sweat equity to your home.

Another great DIY opportunity is to install the remnant of your choice yourself. At Bad Lizard Granite & Quartz, we offer our “carry-out” option, which is an excellent option for anyone looking for high-class and top-of-the-line countertops but who wants to save some money and is capable of installing the countertop on their own. You can learn more about our carry-out option and see if it’s the right option for you by reading our recent blog, Carry-Out Projects at Bad Lizard.

CONSIDER ADDING A SHOWER OR BATHTUB

Compromising on size doesn’t mean you should compromise on style. If your bathroom is large enough to do so and has the proper plumbing access, we recommend adding either a shower or a shower tub combo to your bathroom. A full-sized bath can increase the value and resale of your home.

Cleaning small spaces, especially small showers, can be difficult, but fear not! Bad Lizard has a perfect solution for you. Our Venetian Marble panel installs are not only beautiful and elegant, but they are also super easy to clean — no more worries about scrubbing each grout line or getting in between tile corners. With the Venetian Marble, all it takes is a simple squeegee pass through, and you’re done!
