My Countertops Look Dull. What Should I Do?

Feb 24, 2021 | House, Life Quality, Premier Countertop Installation and Fabrication

Countertops are one of the main components of your kitchen. They are a place we can eat, gather and entertain, and they can also completely transform the aesthetics in the space. But just like anything else in your home, after many years of wear and tear, your once shiny countertops can start to look a little bit dull.

If your countertops have lost some of their shine, do not despair! Our team at Bad Lizard Granite & Quartz are experts in the natural stone countertop fabrication and installation industry and we have some advice on how to bring that desired shine back into your kitchen countertops. Check out our tips below!

REMOVE SOAP AND HARD WATER RESIDUE

Over time, soap and hard water residue can build up on your kitchen countertops and leave a film. You can easily remove this residue and restore shine to your countertops by using professional-grade, commercially available soap film or hard water-removing products that are safe for natural stone surfaces. These products are specifically designed to remove the soap scum and hard water residue that can sometimes make your countertops appear dull.

TRY A POLISHING POWDER

Light surface-etching and grease stains can also cause your countertops to appear less shiny. If this is the case, using a polishing powder specifically made for natural stone surfaces may help remove scratches, stains and other residues from the surface of your countertop.

Before using a polishing powder, you should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and talk to your local countertop expert to verify if the polishing powder is a safe option for your kitchen countertop.

RESEAL YOUR COUNTERTOPS

You may eventually notice etches in the sealer coat of your natural stone countertops. This etching can cause the countertop’s surface to look dull. If the surface beneath the sealer coat is in good condition, you can reseal your countertops to bring back their shine. Keep in mind that not all types of countertops require sealing. You can learn more about the different types of countertops here

If your kitchen countertops need resealing, contact Bad Lizard Granite & Quartz. We are the premier countertop supplier and installer in West Virginia, and our team can professionally reseal your countertops with commercial-grade sealant and have them looking shiny again in no time.

KEEP YOUR COUNTERTOPS SHINY

Now that your kitchen countertops are shiny once more, you can easily keep them that way with proper daily cleaning and care. Our team recommends that you stay clear of abrasive cleaners. You should avoid products, which can weaken your countertop’s sealant, like:

  • Windex
  • Acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon, lime)
  • Cleaners with ammonia
  • Bleach

Instead, we recommend using hot to warm water with gentle dish soap and a microfiber cloth to clean your countertops. If you would like to learn more about how to clean and disinfect your countertops, check out our blog, How to Disinfect Countertops Safely
